My Breast Cancer Experience

Amorvard Foundation.

This story is in commemoration of the World Cancer Day, an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC )

So, we are telling the story to celebrate, encourage and give hope to all cancer patients, particularly breast cancer patients.

It was too much of a coincidence that my daughter, Bukky and I share the same birthday. I was to clock 40 and she, 24. We planned to celebrate our birthdays with funfair before the unexpected happened.

I was diagnosed with a breast cancer . I struggled to take it in my strides to no avail. I was almost eaten up with anxiety as my mind was full of various thoughts. Being a single parent, I wondered how my daughter would cope if the worst happened . At her age, I couldn’t bring myself to see her as an adult.

When I paid a visit to the doctor, I asked him if I would survive it because I have heard many negative stories about breast cancer especially in our clime where health care delivery is poor.

I had hoped for a blissful marriage before this challenge that seemed to further dim my hope. Each time my eyes came in contact with my daughter’s breasts , my heart skipped a beat as I had lost my mother to breast cancer at a tender age.

I didn’t cease to pray for us until I had a successful mastectomy. Of course, with the financial support of friends and family members. After my treatment, I nursed the idea of having a breast cancer foundation .

My daughter and I had a big bash at my full recovery. It was double celebrations. We had both invited and uninvited guests. Friends came with their friends and providence brought Darlington to me. One thing led to another and in a few weeks, he proposed in spite of my condition, as I gave full disclosure to him with regard to my health status.

I will like to take a break here and say a big thank you to Pink & MetaPink Stars Cancer Support group ! I am grateful to God for the Pink & MetaPink Stars Cancer Support Group . As a breast cancer patient, I got so much support from the community ! I made new friends and found other sisters going through the same thing as I was at the time.

Back to Darlingtonđź’– ! We got married. He paid the bill for my breast reconstruction and my daughter and I moved to his house where he lives with his only daughter, Kkelomo, as a widower.

We became a united family. I decided to bring my two daughters up to speed about breast cancer awareness as I acknowledge that early detection is a surefire way to fight breast cancer. Walking closely with my social worker at Amorvard, my self confidence is boosted and I am thankful for the eye opener I got to see , acknowledge and take good advantage of all my network of support.

I got them to do mamogram checks as young as they were even though they were not really vulnerable to breast cancer until they will be 40 years and above. Many diiseases mutate as the world changes- that recurred in my mind

I advised them among other things, to maintain healthy diet and weight, reduce stress, limit alcohol consumption. I also taught them how to examine the breast for likely symptoms which may include nausea, weight loss, skin irritation, breast or nipple pain and discharge, swelling or thickening of the nipple. I just didn’t take chances. Bukky and Kkelomo that I care so much about, gossip and call me “carcinophobic Mama “. “My name is Tola ” , I often retorted.

I am glad that I gave them guides on how to check their breast for signs and symptoms and I hope they teach their unborn children too as they are happily married leaving my darling, Darlington and I to enjoy a blissful marriage like a dream come true.
